From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a gripping narrative featuring celestial beings, demons, and dark forces increasing in strength within the urban setting.
Warning: Spoilers for the third episode of this adventure follow below.
The Soldiers Table Unveiled
Episode 3 ended with a huge suspense moment and revealed the initial group of characters who will split off from the primary party to embark on their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.
This warrior group includes the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), the cleric (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).
Why Split the Party?
With a large ensemble, it was clear from the outset that maintaining everyone at the same party would be impossible.
That’s why, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, intertwining the characters’ stories before dividing into three separate parties: Soldiers, Strategists, and Explorers.
Characteristics of the Combat Party
According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for participants who prefer a typically action-packed fight-heavy story mode where diplomatic options are rare.
Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might appear out of place, but the actions of the third episode demonstrate why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the warrior group.
Reasons to Leave
First, the team knows exactly where to go next after a intense first encounter with The Crow Keepers.
An old friend of the deceased character—whose death started the narrative’s action—manipulated the enemy for his own means, entering the hidden lair, assaulting Thimble, and swiping all the magical artifacts to dispose of.
The antagonist then settled his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.
Individual Reasons
Additionally, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city Dol-Makjar:
- The agile hero, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, wants vengeance.
- Kattigan has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous environment.
- The strong character and Wicander, having defied his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
- However, their position as key figures in the powerful family could help the team access places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Moreover, Teor swore a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now accompany him anywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Finally, all of them are hunted by the rulers that govern the city for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city dangerous:
- Thimble and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
- The warrior and Wicander defied the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
- Teor is marked for death by the clan.
This results in them little choice but to head to the remote area in pursuit of Casimir.
